Provenance
Untraced until 1920, when it was bought by Paul Oppé (1878–1957; no Oppé number) at Rimells, and sold in 1996 by his descendants with the rest of Oppé’s collection to the present owner, the Tate Gallery (T08575).

The drawing here is a copy of a sketch by Towne, also dated 1778 (FT143). Ann Sanders’s copy has an addition, in the bottom-left corner, of a figure walking a mule. Oppé suggests that the outline and signature are in Towne’s hand. The date certainly looks like Towne’s writing but the signature is less clearly his, although much of the outline, stronger than the brushwork, may be by Towne.
