Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist in 1816 to James White of Exeter (1744–1825), on whose death it reverted to Towne’s residuary legatee John Herman Merivale (1779–1844) and his successors. Merivale’s granddaughters Maria Sophia Merivale (1853–1928) and Judith Ann Merivale (1860–1945), both of Oxford, inherited the drawing in May 1915 (BP173). Judith Merivale attempted to sell the drawing at Squire Gallery in 1938—unsuccessfully, as it is marked “returned Oct 39” in the Barton Place catalogue. At some point subsequently it was acquired by Alan Douglas Pilkington (1890–1973), who gave or bequeathed it to the present owner, Eton College, Windsor

This is a preparatory sketch for FT037, dated 1773, and was made therefore no later than 1773 and possibly on 16 July of that year (see FT037). It may be part of the same numbered series that includes two other numbered Ugbrooke studies, FT038 and FT039.
This is perhaps the drawing sold by Squire Gallery on 9 January 1948 to Colnaghi (no.A15074), where it was sold on 14 January 1948 for £330 to Gilbert Davis. However, whereas that drawing was described by Colnaghi as “Ugbrooke Park sign on verso pen & wash inscribed on verso”, this drawing is not signed. The Colnaghi drawing may therefore be one of the other Ugbrooke sketches (FT038, FT039, FT040).
