Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist in 1816 to James White of Exeter (1744–1825), on whose death it passed to Towne’s residuary legatee John Herman Merivale (1779–1844) and his successors. Merivale’s granddaughter Emily Harriet Buckingham (1853–1923) inherited the drawing in 1915 and her sister Frances Ann Laura Solly (b.1858) sold it to Agnew’s (no.3986) on 6 September 1944 for £20. The same day it was bought for £31 10s. less commission of £1 11s. 6d. by Sir William Worsley, Bt (1890–1973), whose family sold it at Christie’s on 20 November 1984, lot 67, for £7,500. It was subsequently owned by Albany Gallery, London, and by Martyn Gregory Fine Art, and was sold at Christie’s by “a corporation” on 9 November 1999, lot 74, for £19,000. It has since been offered sale by Guy Peppiatt.
