Comment
This drawing, which appears on folio 8 (recto) of the sketchbook, is a copy of plate 79 of Liber Veritatis, vol.1, etched by Richard Earlom after Claude Lorrain. However, it seems likely that Miss Maingey’s immediate source was a drawing that Towne made from the etching, given the presence of Towne’s characteristic pen line throughout. In fact, perhaps Towne applied some of the light grey outline in the mid-ground tree just behind the cattle herders, as it seems decidedly more competent than much of the darker pen work, for example in the bottom-left foreground.
