Provenance

Untraced until sold by Ethel Mary Leon Jones (d.1975) at Sotheby’s on 3 October 1964, lot 49, to Leger Galleries. The frame bears an old Leger Galleries label with the words “Ex Jeavons Collection”. The drawing was sold at Woolley and Wallis of Salisbury on 12 December 2012, lot 295.

This drawing was sold as a Towne, and was exhibited as such by John Spink as recently as 2005, but it is clearly the work of a pupil. As the inscription confirms, it is a copy after an imaginary landscape by Towne (FT903).
