Exhibition History
Exhibition of Original Drawings at the Gallery, No.20 Lower Brook Street, Grosvenor Square, 20 Lower Brook Street, 1805, no. 189 as 'St. Maria a Monte, at ditto [ie Naples]'

The one surviving sketch of Santa Maria a Monte (FT242) could not have been exhibited, as it is a monochrome sheet with no mount. The likeliest explanation is that the exhibit was a worked-up version of another Santa Maria a Monte sketch made on the spot on the same or another day and perhaps constituting one of the missing Naples series (for instance nos.16, 17, or 18). Given Thomas Jones’s commitment to this spot, it is likely that he and Towne spent quite some time sketching there.
