Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist in 1816 to James White of Exeter (1744–1825), on whose death it passed to Towne’s residuary legatee John Herman Merivale (1779–1844) and his successors. Merivale’s granddaughters Maria Sophia Merivale (1853–1928) and Judith Ann Merivale (1860–1945), both of Oxford, inherited the drawing in May 1915 (listed below BP89 as “Snowdon framed JAM”) and it is thereafter untraced (as the Barton Place catalogue does not record the sale or gift of this drawing, it may have remained in Judith Merivale’s collection until her death).

This is the only drawing of a Snowdon subject that is known. Two versions in oil of a view called Looking North from the Lower Slopes of Snowdon are known (FT141 and FT142), but the fact that one of them is dated 1775 means that they cannot derive from a sketch made on the 1777 tour.
Towne was in the area of Snowdon’s lower slopes when drawing Aberglaslyn (FT086, FT087, FT088) and Llyn Gwellyn (FT092, FT093, FT094).
