Provenance

Descended through the White Abbott family until 9 December 1981, when it was bought by Spink & Son from J. N. White Abbott. On 29 April 1982 Spink sold it for £1,100 to a UK art dealer, whereafter it is untraced.

Comment

Despite the discrepancy in numbers (Towne’s drawing is numbered 12 and this copy is numbered 13), this could be a copy of the ancient ruins at Baia (FT239). It seems very unlikely to be a copy of Towne’s number 13 (FT240), since White Abbott made a copy of that which he called “The Island of Capria”. (FT817).
