Comment
This drawing is known only from the inscription to Towne’s drawing of 19 March 1781 (FT239), which reads “June 22nd 1783 / A Copy of this Mr. Downman had in St. James No.79”. Towne shared John Downman’s London address when exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1788 (78 St James’s Street, presumably a misprint). The following year, and for the exhibitions of 1792–94, Towne’s address was “Mr Downman’s, 5 Leicester Fields”.
