Provenance

Sold on 31 July 1946 by the artist’s great-granddaughter Rosetta Frances Dobson (1892–1965) for £6 to the Fine Art Society (no.4534) as a Francis Towne, within a large group of works by John White Abbott and William Payne. On 18 October 1946 the drawing was bought for £63 by Sir William Worsley, Bt (1890–1973), who on 30 September 1952 sold it back to the Fine Art Society (no.5886) for £60. On 30 June 1963 the Fine Art Society sold it again, for £120 to R. F. Butler, again as a Towne. It is thereafter untraced until offered for sale at Christie’s on 14 July 1992, lot 22, and again at Christie’s on 13 July 1993, lot 16 (as a Francis Towne), when it was bought for £4,200 by Spink & Son, who sold it on 24 May 1994 for £7,800 to a UK corporate collection. It was sold at Sotheby’s on 15 July 1999, lot 124, for £5,200, whereafter it is untraced.
