Examination Gainsborough’s House (image); Sotheby's records

Bequeathed by the artist in 1816 to James White of Exeter (1744–1825), on whose death it passed to Towne’s residuary legatee John Herman Merivale (1779–1844) and his successors. Merivale’s granddaughters Maria Sophia Merivale (1853–1928) and Judith Ann Merivale (1860–1945), both of Oxford, inherited the drawing in May 1915 (BP151). In 1938 Judith Merivale sold it to Agnew’s for £8, and it was sold at Sotheby’s on 19 March 1981, lot 105, for £3,200. In 2012 it was exhibited at Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury, as from an English private collection.

Ullswater is a long lake west of Keswick, on the road between Ambleside and Penrith. This is a view looking south-west standing on Pooley Bridge near Penrith.

FT526 is suggested as an 1805 exhibit merely on the grounds that there were three Ullswater pictures on display and only two other finished views of Ullswater are known (FT493, FT499).
