Provenance

Sold at Bearnes Hampton and Littlewood of Exeter, 23 October 2013, lot 452. Probably this is the same drawing that the White Abbott family offered for sale at Sotheby’s on 11 November 1993, lot 80, when it did not sell (though no photograph of lot 80 was made and the dimensions—190 x 210 mm in 1993—are somewhat incompatible). The 2013 Bearnes catalogue noted that the group of eight White Abbott drawings, from which this came, were the property of a deceased estate; two of them had been given to White Abbott’s daughter, Elizabeth Abbott, in 1832.
