A few of Towne’s final oil paintings and exhibits survive, though more are lost (FT645, FT645a, FT648, FT649, FT652, FT653). Whereas until 1803 Towne exhibited oil paintings at the Royal Academy, during his final decade when he was no longer seeking associate membership, he adopted a different exhibiting strategy by showing watercolours—chiefly at his own exhibition at 20 Lower Brook Street in February 1805, but also at the Royal Academy itself (FT644). He turned, too, to a new exhibiting society, the British Institution, where in 1808 he made a copy of a Claude Lorrain painting (FT647). He seems to have chosen the British Institution to redisplay oil paintings from his past career (such as FT019, FT572, FT616, FT617, FT646), before the society banned the practice in 1810. Thereafter, Towne showed only recently painted work (FT650, FT651).
