Comment

This painting was asterisked in the catalogue to indicate that it was for sale. The authors of Candid Observations, on the Principal Performances Now Exhibiting at the New Room of the Society of Artists, Near Exeter-Change. Indended as a Vade Mecum to that Exhibition (London, 1772) wrote of Towne’s 1772 exhibits (this and FT018): “The scenes are rural and pleasing; the Pencil rather too free; too much of Manner; and the Brown predominates. This Artist has heretofore exhibited chaster Imitations of Nature.”
