This is a view of Exeter from the Haven Banks of the Exe. White Abbott made a view from the same spot (Sotheby’s, 8 December 2005, lot 139).
The limited palette indicates that Towne was teaching his pupils to draw with a grey underdrawing, then add tints—here of green for the foliage and brown for the buildings.
There is evidence of some old gum or glue on the verso of the drawing, so it may well have once been mounted by Towne, or pasted into an album.
