As the inscription states, James Curtis commissioned two oil paintings from Towne in 1784 (this and FT410). Conceivably it might have been the picture sold by Dennis at Foster’s on 8 November 1832 (Lugt 13109), lot 423, Town – View on Lake Albano, for £1 2s. to Prowett.
