Comment
This is a watercolour of the Chateau de Wimmis in Switzerland, based on a ca. 1775 etching by Johann Ludwig Aberli (1723–1786). However, Aberli’s print differs in many small details and approaches to sections of the composition here, and it is very unlikely that MacKinnon’s immediate source was the etching. As his watercolour is drawn in Towne’s style, doubtless he was copying Towne’s own interpretation of Aberli’s work. A date of 1798 is suggested tentatively as Mackinnon dated another copy after Aberli to that year.
