Merivale’s granddaughters Maria Sophia Merivale (1853–1928) and Judith Ann Merivale (1860–1945), both of Oxford, inherited the drawing in May 1915 (BP10). Judith Merivale sold it to Dr Robert Alfred Worthington (1878–1945) of Exeter on 4 August 1932, for £8 8s. It is threafter untraced apart from its sale at Sotheby’s on 13 November 1997, lot 15—although see FT254.
