Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist in 1816 to James White of Exeter (1744–1825), on whose death it passed to Towne’s residuary legatee John Herman Merivale (1779–1844) and his successors. Merivale’s grandson George Montagu Merivale (b.1855) of Sydney, Australia, inherited the drawing and it descended through the family of his daughter Angel Merivale (b.1884) until it was offered for sale by Mrs R. Madoc at Sotheby’s on 15 July 1976, lot 40a, when it did not sell, as it was offered again at Christie’s on 20 March 1979, lot 134, where it was unsold, as it was sold at Lawrence of Crewkerne on 22 May 1980, lot 82. It was sold at Sotheby’s on 11 July 1990, lot 61, for £9,500, whereafter it is untraced. It was acquired at some unknown point by Leger Galleries (no.909508).
