A preparatory drawing exists for this picture (FT022), which clearly dates from the 1770s, though probably not from the end of that decade. Although the image is of poor quality, there can be little doubt that the picture is Towne’s work, both on stylistic grounds and given the existence of the preparatory study. The subject matter can only be guessed at: it is evidently an estuary view and it would be no surprise, therefore, if it were a scene in Devon. It may be that this was one of the Society of Artists exhibits of the early 1770s (for instance FT012, FT013, FT018, or FT020).
