Provenance

Untraced until offered for sale at Sotheby’s on 21 November 1985, lot 173, when it did not sell. However, this must be the drawing that Colnaghi called “Two figures on a path in a rocky landscape, s&d 1788. Collection: Francis Abbot, godson of the artist. Pen 157x112”. That drawing was sold at Sotheby’s on 17 October 1956, lot 51, to Colnaghi (no.A21738), who sold it on 26 October 1956 for £10 to Edward Brian Seago (1910–1974). Subsequently it was in the collection of Anthony Jennings QC (1960–2008) and was sold at Cheffins of Cambridge on 19–20 September 2012, lot 347, for £1,100 excluding fees (a group of six drawings) to the present owner.

Comment

This looks like Towne’s own composition in emulation of a seventeenth-century Bolognese drawing, made for pupils to copy.
