Untraced until acquired by Iolo Aneurin Williams (1890–1962) by 1952, and sold by a member of his family at Sotheby’s on 31 March 1999, lot 37, for £1,100 to the present owner within a sketchbook containing FT843 to FT854.

This drawing, which appears on folio 10 (recto) of the sketchbook, is a copy after an Italianate landscape composition by Towne (FT794). Much of the brown pen work in the tree in the right of this drawing was evidently added by Towne himself.
