Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist in 1816 to James White of Exeter (1744–1825), on whose death it passed to Towne’s residuary legatee John Herman Merivale (1779–1844) and his successors. Merivale’s granddaughters Maria Sophia Merivale (1853–1928) and Judith Ann Merivale (1860–1945), both of Oxford, inherited the drawing in May 1915 (BP1). In February 1934 Judith Merivale sold it to Sidney Kitson and in October 1992 Alice Barbara Kitson gave it to the current owner, the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford (P.804).

Comment
This is catalogued by Joll, and also in the Barton Place catalogue, as an Italian subject. However, it is clearly a drawing of ca. 1809–15 of a British landscape and was probably originally a sheet from one of Towne’s sketchbooks of that period. The size of this drawing is similar to the pages of Towne’s 1810 and 1813 sketchbooks, for example. But for its lack of sheep, this drawing would surely be the Squire exhibit of 1934.
