Provenance
Commissioned by Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, Bt (1752–1794), or Lady Acland and descended in his family until sold by Sir Richard Thomas Dyke Acland, Bt (1906–1990), at Sotheby’s on 21 November 1968, lot 31, for £1,600 to Leger Galleries. It was offered for sale at Phillips on 2 November 1987, lot 12, but is otherwise untraced.

The preparatory sketch for this is unknown. According to a note from Sir Francis Acland to Paul Oppé, the subject is Luccombe’s Church of St Mary the Virgin, a few miles south of Holnicote.1
