Provenance
Sold by the executors of Walter C. Hetherington of Gerrards Cross (dead by 1978) at Christie’s (as by Francis Towne) on 14 February 1978, lot 111(surely the wrong lot number), to Mrs Withycombe for £500, and again (as by Towne) at Bearnes in Exeter on 4 March 2003, lot 352, for £360 to a private collector, who still retained it in 2005.

The unsteady drawing here contrasts with the complexity of the Rubens drawing that the Tate has attributed to Frances Merivale (FT862). A second drawing is also inscribed with Frances Merivale’s name and may well be her work also. This drawing is another version of a sketch by Frances Merivale’s brother John Herman Merivale, which he inscribed “Mount Radford from a lane leading / into the Alphington Road beyond the Turnpike / Sept. 18th. 1810” and is within a sketchbook now at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter (FT889).
