This drawing is known only through the 1803 copy of it by Patience Carpenter (FT895c), which Towne himself inscribed: “Near the Cascade in the Groves / at Ambleside at the head of the / Lake of Windermere Westmoreland / From a drawing by / Francis Towne / 1803”. 

Judging from the copy, Towne’s sketch was made on Roman paper and was heavily worked up, in much the same manner as FT528.
