Provenance
Untraced until bought at a West Country auction and sold shortly afterwards to Spink-Leger Galleries (it was offered for sale at Sotheby’s on 12 November 1997, lot 95 but did not sell). Spink-Leger sold it at Christie’s on 26 November 2002, lot 56 for £4,500, whereafter it is untraced.

This picture is a faithful version of FT178 dated 1780, although it varies in minor details, such as the introduction of an additional figure on the path, and the rocks in the left foreground. It appears to have been cut down in size, as the foreground-right tree is barely visible at the right edge. As it was evidently not an exhibition picture, it may well have been produced on commission from a Devon client.
