This is a watercolour drawn in Towne’s style, which was doubtless copied by Mackinnon. The watercolour is stuck down to a mount, but the subject is identified by the museum as the Bonhay, an area running along the Exe north of Exeter, perhaps on the basis of an inscription that is now obscured, or other information that was available at the time of acquisition. Here Mackinnon would be looking up the river with the city behind him. A date around 1798 is proposed simply on the grounds that this was the year when Mackinnon drew a view of Lausanne that shows Towne's influence.
