Provenance

Untraced apart from its ownership by Dr Robert Alfred Worthington (1878–1945) of Exeter in 1932. Possibly this was among the many pictures lost when Dr Worthington’s house, 30 Southernhay East, was destroyed by an incendiary bomb in 1942.

Comment

The Chateau de Glerolles is on the north bank of Lake Geneva between Lausanne and Vevey.

This drawing is assumed to be the basis for the 1786 watercolour of the chateau (FT450), although the 1932 exhibition catalogue describes it as being in portrait format whereas the 1786 work is landscape. Although this work is not featured in the Barton Place catalogue, it is fairly likely that it came from the Merivale family, especially as Worthington made at least one purchase directly from them.
