Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist in 1816 to James White of Exeter (1744–1825), on whose death it passed to Towne’s residuary legatee John Herman Merivale (1779–1844) and his successors. Merivale’s granddaughters Maria Sophia Merivale (1853–1928) and Judith Ann Merivale (1860–1945), both of Oxford, inherited the drawing in May 1915 (BP9). In February 1935 Judith Merivale sold it to Squire Gallery for £6 6s. (see, however, FT265). It was subsequently owned by J. P. Chancellor, who sold it at Christie’s on 7 March 1972, lot 63, where it was bought by the Manning Gallery. It was owned by Anthony Reed between 1972 and 1974 and by Mrs Muriel Hirst between 1974 and 1979; prior to being on sale at W/S Fine Art Ltd in 2005, it was owned again by Anthony Reed. Either this drawing or FT255 is ,On the road from Rome to Tivoli, Apl 1781 sold to Agnew’s (no.4003) on 26 October 1944 for £35 by Michael Thomas Harvey Sadleir (1888–1957), son of Sir Michael Ernest Sadler (1861–1943). Agnew’s sold it on 24 July 1945 for £45 to Hon. Sir James Cochran Stevenson Runciman (1903–2000).
