Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist in 1816 to James White of Exeter (1744–1825), on whose death it passed to Towne’s residuary legatee John Herman Merivale (1745–1844) and his successors. Merivale’s granddaughters Maria Sophia Merivale (1853–1928) and Judith Ann Merivale (1860–1945), both of Oxford, inherited the drawing in May 1915 as part of a sketchbook containing FT752 to FT764, which they sold in 1927 to Walker’s Galleries for £60. It was bought there by Sir Michael Ernest Sadler (1861–1943), who presented it in 1932 to the current owner, the Cooper Gallery, Barnsley (Inv. 8).

Comment

Tiverton is a town some fifteen miles north of Exeter.1 Towne has drawn the tower of St Peter’s Church with some of the ruins of Tiverton Castle visible in the centre of the drawing. The castle, on the banks of the River Exe, was an old Courtenay residence. The riverside situation of St Peter’s is more evident in an etching dated 1813 than in Towne’s drawing.2
