Comment
The present Lord Clifford has identified FT157 as a view “from the bottom end of the Higher Water” and FT159 as a view of Lower Water.1 If this is so, then FT157 looks broadly north. The ground on the left rises towards the remains of the Danish encampment where Towne drew FT053. The preparatory study is not known.
This and the other oil painting of Ugbrooke are listed among the pictures displayed in the Billiard Room in 1827—“Two of Ugbrooke Park, by Towne”, listed immediately after the two views of Chudleigh Rock by W. Tomkins, in Thomas H. Williams, Devonshire Scenery, 2nd ed. (Exeter, 1827).
