Provenance

The 12th Baron Clifford of Chudleigh (1889–1964) gave this to Harold and Margaret Michelmore on 21 October 1955. It was offered for sale at Bearne’s in Exeter on 15 January 1992, lot 85, and again at Bearnes on 9 March 1994, lot 690 (as Waterfall in the Chudleigh Glen), and was sold at Sotheby’s on 10 November 1994, lot 114, for £1,700, whereafter it is untraced. Lord Clifford’s ownership until 1955 means that the drawing probably originated in the collection of Hugh, 5th Baron Clifford of Chudleigh (1756–1793).

Comment

This and the following drawing (FT541a) both show the same waterfall at Chudleigh rocks, with its sharp protruding rock to the left of the water. The same feature is evident in an 1844 lithograph by William Spreat of the scene. See also the Comment at FT573.
