Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist in 1816 to James White of Exeter (1744–1825), on whose death it passed to Towne’s residuary legatee, John Herman Merivale (1779–1844) and his successors. At some point the drawing was inherited by Merivale’s great-grandson Major Anthony Hubert Gibbs (1874–1957) and sold by him to Agnew’s on 28 March 1940 (no.3062) for £10. Museum records state that the drawing was given to the present owner, the Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield (no.813), in 1946 as one of many bequests from Alderman J. G. Graves (1865/1866–1945). However, Agnew’s records state that it was sold to the museum on 28 March 1940 for £14 10s.
