Provenance
This is probably BP224, bequeathed by the artist in 1816 to James White of Exeter (1744–1825), on whose death it passed to Towne’s residuary legatee John Herman Merivale (1779–1844) and his successors. Merivale’s granddaughters Maria Sophia Merivale (1853–1928) and Judith Ann Merivale (1860–1945), both of Oxford, inherited BP224 in May 1915. On 12 April 1946 this drawing was sold by Judith Merivale’s executors to Agnew’s (no.4545), where on 17 March 1947 it was sold for £70 to Mrs Eustace Palmer of Fencewood House, Hermitage, Newbury, in whose family it remained in 1971 but is thereafter untraced.

Paul Oppé’s note of BP224 reads: “224 Large Werrington Park 1799. Green down foregrd, blue distances. L.heavy ugly trees ink not contour but accent. Very bright yellows & blues. Ink thro’out but all in compar. large strokes.”1 The two sheets of this drawing are surely an indication of it having a large size, and its date corresponds with BP224. Agnew’s records describe the Palmer Werrington as being dated 1799 and as having a Merivale provenance.
