Provenance
Watercolour with pen and ink, 5 9/16 x 8 11/16 in. (141 x 221 mm). Bought by Leonard Duke (D.2619) and sold by him at Sotheby’s on 16 July 1970, lot 181, for £12 to Hartman. In his catalogue Duke writes:
From a parcel of drawings with, I think, a Harcourt provenance. It included also drawings by P. Sandby, Theodosius Forrest, & Rackett. The possibility of its being by Towne has occurred to me after a careful inspection of the left-hand half of Miss Barlow’s large English late[?] view by Towne [FT596]. I have now confirmed at the BM without a doubt that this is by Towne.
Duke was optimistic with attributions and the very low price the work fetched in 1970 suggests that the market did not accept his attribution.
