John Jeffrey Short (1753 - 1801)

client, pupil

Jeffrey Short of Bickham House, in the parish of Kenn near Exminster, four miles south of Exeter. Bickham is in the area South of Exeter where Towne was most active; furthermore Short married into the family of one of Towne's patrons when in 1786 he married Charlotte, daughter of John Baring of Mount Radford (1730-1816). Short was one of Exeter's social and commercial elite at the end of the 18th century. He went into the wool business in Exeter with his father-in-law, was a founder of the Devonshire Bank. Short was himself a watercolourist and made copies of some of Towne's continental views.
